Meditation is the act of being and watching the gentle progression of the fluctuations of the mind. It's not only a witnessing of the mind, but also a tool for the mind. It's a way to anchor into the present and increase our sense of awareness. Meditation is a practice for the real world, as the more we practice it, the more focused, calm, patient and understanding we become with ourselves and others. It all starts with the daily intentional pause that is meditation.
Though that is the all-encompassing description of meditation, it most closely describes mindfulness meditation.
Mindfulness by definition is "the quality or state of being conscious or aware of something." To be mindful is to experience things as they are. Mindfulness as a meditation practice, helps us tune into our external environment, our body, our breath, watch our minds, and emotions. Through the observance of these things, we can access the present moment. Mindfulness helps with presence more than any other type of meditation.
This type of meditation has been studied more than any other type and has been shown to:
- Increase sense of appreciation & gratitude
- Improve relationships
- Help with self-acceptance
- Support peace of mind
- Increase presence
- Improve mental clarity
- Increase emotional intelligence
- Increase sense of compassion
Living mindfully means being aware, processing emotions in a healthy way, communicating with kindness and honesty, choosing thoughts that are relevant and helpful, connecting with your environment and body, and so much more. A mindful life doesn’t get caught up in what doesn’t matter. A mindful life is a life lived.
